In the late 1920's, Elmer Gantry is a charismatic, alcoholic con man and natural evangelist, ready and able to make a quick buck using his genuine knowlege of the bible. When he meets Sister Sharon Falconer, a lay preacher whose passionate revivalism has attracted quite a following, Gantry uses his talents to talk himself into a job as part of her traveling tent show. His past soon catches up with him in when he meets his former girlfriend, Lulu Baines, a preacher's daughter whose reputation he ruined. Now that Lulu is a prostitute, Gantry is torn between his guilt and attraction to her. Revengeful Lulu sees to it that Sister Falconer finds out about their complex tryst. After that, nothing is the same for Gantry.
