It's the 1970s, terrorist violence is on every networks' nightly news programming. Meanwhile, the corporate structure of the UBS Television Network is changing to meet new, lame journalistic standards. Howard, the aging UBS news anchor, has low ratings and so the network fires him. Afterwards, Howard's unexpected, on-air reaction to this news reaches millions of live viewers who mimic his reaction and raise the ratings. His unpredictable behavior draws new viewers, but turns the nightly news into a scandalous joke.
