During World War II, the owners of baseball teams, not wanting the sport to be dormant indefinitely, decide to form teams with women. A scout passes through Oregon and finds two strong players who are sisters. Dottie, the more talented is coaxed by her adventuresome sister, Kit, into leaving home to try out. They're chosen for the same team. Their manager, Jimmy, a former major league player, is now a drunk and is not doing his job. So Dottie steps in. It isn't long before things liven up for everyone on and off the field, as female athletes from all over the country bond in an unusual time in the history of sports.
