Dolores discharges her son Pat, Jr. from a mental health institution, against his doctor's advice and without the knowledge of her husband, Pat Sr., after he completed an eight month court-ordered stay based on the condition that he live at the home of his parents in Philadelphia. Pat Jr., a teacher, was institutionalized for beating up the lover of his wife, Nikki. While being observed, he was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Upon his release, Nikki's gone and he forgets to takes his medication, but does attend his mandatory therapy sessions. Lacking a reality check, he believes he can manage things. Coping in the home of his parents is hard because his father has OCD and is addicted to gambling. When his best friend Ronnie sets him up with his wife's widowed sister, Tiffany, a recovering sex addict, he's out the door. Pat and Tiffany begin a friendship based on helping each other.
