In 1978 Cambridge, Mass. an unemployed, alcoholic and bipolar father becomes a stay-at-home father, caring for his two young daughters while his wife moves to Manhattan to complete a scholarship at Columbia hoping it will lead to a great job. While his lithium works, he avoids it because he thinks it reduces his euphoria. Without it he is irresponsible, caring, risky, disorderly, creative, hospitable, outrageous or all of the above. He and his daughters learn life lessons about how to treat others if you want to be treated with respect yourself. They are also left to wonder if is he any better or worse than parents who claim they're perfect?
