Prior to WWII, Taiwan was a Japanese colony for fifty years. The oldest of four brothers in the Lin family turns his bar into "Little Shanghai" to profit from the postwar boom. The second Lin brother disappeared in the Philippines during the war. The third brother has returned from Shanghai to recover from a mental breakdown, but now associates with drug smugglers. The fourth and youngest brother, is a deaf and mute man who supports himself with a photo studio.
