In 1948 Loretta Webb lives in grinding poverty. She shares, with her parents and seven siblings, a two room tar-paper shack in rural Kentucky. Doolittle Lynn, a local WWII veteran returns home not to work in a coal mine, but to drink and sell enough moonshine to be called "Mooney." He's 21 and Loretta's 15 when they meet, marry, and leave for Washington State, where "Doo" knows there's better employment above ground. By 19, Loretta's a mother of four and Doo buys her a guitar to help pass the time. She teaches herself how to play, sing, and write songs. Doo is impressed. Acting as her manager, he sends her photo, along with a demo record, to numerous radio stations and her single becomes a hit. Soon she's traveling the country as a major star, best friends with her idol, Patsy Cline, and the songs she writes are based on Doo's drinking and philandering. Pushing herself to exhaustion, she suffers a nervous breakdown onstage.
