In 1948 Atlanta, after damaging her car, a 73-year-old widow called Miss Daisy must face the fact that she that can no longer drive. Her son hires a black driver for her named Hoke. At first, she refuses to allow him to drive her anywhere, but Hoke wins her over with his charm, wit, and she begins to enjoy their banter. Miss Daisy recognizes Hoke is illiterate and teaches him to read. Over the course of twenty years they grow close, dependent and are more honest with each than they are with family; sharing their anger, frustration, and fears.
