Though young Forrest Gump is told he's slow and has scoliosis, he never thinks of himself as disadvantaged thanks in part to his positive, supportive mother. Even after she's gone he leads anything but a restricted life due to his ability to focus. Forrest literally does what he's told to do, so he runs until he achieves touchdowns, scrambles through Vietnam intact, ping pongs his way to championships, and captains a shrimp boat to success, all with his childlike optimism. The one person Forrest cares about the most appears the most difficult to save, the sweet but troubled Jenny.
