In the rural town of Holten Mills, New Hampshire in 1987 at the start of the long Labor Day weekend, a severely depressed mother, Adele, with a thirteen-year-old son, Henry, are fending for themselves after the husband has left and remarried a woman with children on the other side of town. Since school is about to start, Adele, whose growing social anxiety keeps them home, consents to some back-to-school clothes shopping for Henry at a large discount store. Henry is approached by Frank, a convict who escaped from the prison hospital after an appendectomy, now seeking overnight refuge before leaving again. Yet, once he's in their home, Frank's presence improves things for both of them. While the county wide police search grows, Adele and Frank realize their share some key events from the past.
