Traumatized early by something she can't articulate, by 1964 Marnie has grown up to be a beautiful, yet frigid kleptomaniac who steals to support her mother, an unloving, semi-invalid. Her only release is her passion for horses and riding. After stealing from her boss, she moves to Philadelphia. Here she can ride at her favorite stable and look for a job with a new new identity. Marnie is hired by a publishing firm and noticed by its heir, Mark, a recent widower and "amateur zoologist" with a special interest in female predators. Mark catches her hand in the firm's vault and blackmails her into marrying him. After a disastrous honeymoon, he has a private detective look into her past.
