By 1996, Bessie and Lee are sisters who have been estranged for nearly 20 years due to radically different personalities and life choices. Bessie remained in their family home in Florida to be a caregiver for their bed-ridden father after his stroke seventeen years earlier. Lee, a recent graduate of cosmetology school, moved to Ohio to marry a drifter who left after their second son was born. After Bessie's doctor informs her she has leukemia and needs a bone marrow transplant, Lee must pull her son from a mental institution to join her and his brother for a guilt trip back home. Bessie quickly bonds with Lee's troubled son in a way Lee never could, leaving Lee to ask herself what she left behind, what remains, and what can be created from this unexpected family reunion.
