Following the conviction of her German father for treason against the U.S., Alicia escapes her complex feelings about her love of the United States, horror over her father's actions, and humiliation of what others think of her through men and alcohol. When she's approached by a U.S. government agent named Devlin, to spy on a group of her father's Nazi friends operating out of Rio de Janeiro, she's resentful but accepts hoping it will exonerate her by convincing the U.S. government of her loyalty.
