In 1941, Julie prepares to leave her loving but financially irresponsible husband, Roger. Before leaving, she goes through her scrapbook and begins to play the songs that mark the memory of each page. Flashbacks reveal all the joys and sorrows that have brought them to this point: how she and Roger met, their honeymoon year in Tokyo when he was a foreign correspondent, the reason for their return to the states, and their period as inexperienced parents when they adopted their daughter as an infant.
