Over one weekend in a small Kansas town in 1955, Hal, raised with abuse by an alcoholic single father and then a football scholarship hero who dropped out, is now a drifter. So, he jumps from a freight car to seek a job from his former college roommate and last hope, Alan, the son of the wealthiest man in town. Alan greets him warmly, offers him a job with introductions, and together they join the community in the Labor Day Picnic. Trouble begins when he meets Madge, the local beauty queen who was also raised by a single parent, her mother, in a women's boarding house and is now being pressured to marry Alan. Madge is not only attracted to Hal, she relates to him as her insecure counterpart: a person noted only for his looks.
