In Harlem, 1987, sixteen-year-old Precious, an illiterate, obese black teen is pregnant with her second child; both children fathered by her biological father, who has raped her since she was a child. Her infant daughter, Mongo, has Down Syndrome and lives with her grandmother, while Precious lives with her mother Mary, who abuses her daily while she smokes, watches television, and collects welfare through fraud. She conveniently lectures Precious that education won't help her because she wants Precious to solidify the future of her welfare. As a form of surviving this horrific reality, Precious has dissociative daydreams about herself in glamorous situations. When her principal realizes she's pregnant again, she's transferred to a small, alternative school for pregnant teens with Miss Blu Rain. Under her consistent guidance, Precious begins to learn to read and write. Though her social worker and teacher believe they've seen or heard every unimaginable story, they suspect Precious is the victim of an especially bad situation and begin to pay closer attention to her. So when her mother reveals devastating news after Precious delivers her second child in the presence of her social worker, Precious chooses to believe she will escape the grips of her abusive mother and be able to raise her children on her own loving terms.
