After years of observing his father's alcoholism and his mother bi-polar disorder, Augusten's parents finally divorce. He lives with his ill mother while his father quits drinking and remarries. His mother, who thinks of herself as a fine poet on the verge of fame is too busy to care for him and so she delivers him as a teenager to the eccentric household of her delusional psychiatrist, Dr. Finch. For the year he lived in this eccentric environment Augusten skipped school, kept a journal, took an older male lover, and found friendship with Finch's reckless daughter and long suffering wife. When his mother finally returns for him after abandonment, he has a plan.
