Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai is about to experience the biggest day of his life as all of India watches while he is one question away from winning 20 million rupees on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire? But when the show breaks for the night, he's arrested on suspicion of cheating. How could a street kid know so much? To prove his innocence, Jamal tells the story of his life: the death of their mother during an attack; the slums where he and his brother lived; their capture by child slave traders posing as an orphanage; their escape and adventures on the road; the vicious encounters with corrupt local gangs; and of Latika, their third "Muscateer" and the girl he still loves. Each chapter of his story reveals not only how he was able to answer the game show's questions, but how he grew up to be the admirable young man that he is.
