In 1947 a southern writer named Stingo moves to Brooklyn, new York to work on a book. The neighbors in hIs boarding house neighbors are lovers Sophie, a Holocaust survivor and Nathan, an American man and Jew enraged with the Third Reich who rescued her from starvation. The three become fast friends and Stingo realizes the happiness of Sophie and Nathan is endangered by her past ghosts and his current obsessions.
