In New York, a dance instructor, Pierre, sees a black teenager vandalizing the car of an inner city high school principal due to his frustration over being wrongly denied entrance to the school dance. The next day he volunteers to teach partner dancing to the students in semi-permanent after school detention, challenging the cynical, overworked principal, who views the idea as absurd. The students, who all come from volatile home environments, are reluctant, rude, and not used to trusting each other or outsiders. Pierre struggles against the preconceived notions the students have about him and their ability to learn to partner dance. But he wins his battle when the detention group agrees to compete in a ballroom dance contest.
