Following WWII, in 1948, the Russians in the Soviet Union blockaded the Allied sectors of Berlin, Germany in an early attempt at Cold War to control the entire city. American troops were sent back and forth to Berlin with supplies of coal and other necessities to aid the war-torn Germans. Many soldiers, especially those who had spent time as German prisoners of war, felt uncomfortable about being among such a recent enemy. Others adapted with the same sense of irony, that the now starving Germans had, and they mingled freely. This is the story of how two, Sgt. Hank Kowalski and Sgt. Danny McCullough, handled their situations alone, and as friends and confidants.
