In 1944, near the end of WW II, s badly burned man, Laszlo is tended by an emotionally wounded nurse named Hana, who fled from her unit in depression to stay in the abandoned ruins of an Italian monastery. As she tried to comfort him, he reveals his mysterious past through flashbacks that include an affair with a married Englishwoman during the time he was mapping the Sahara landscape. Hana learns to heal her own scars as she hears the mysterious story of the dying man.
