While reading a book by Nicholai Gogol as he travels by train to visit his grandfather in Calcutta, Bengali-speaking Ashoke converses with fellow-traveler, Ghosh, who convinces him move to the United States. The train crashes and Ashoke is one of the few survivors. After a long, contemplative recuperation he moves to America, is educated there, and then returns to India in 1977 to meet Ashima, his bride in an arranged marriage. They move to his apartment in New York and after becoming the parents of a boy, Gogol and a girl, Sonia, to the suburbs of New Jersey. When Gogol and Sonia are in their late teens, they take them to a life changing trip to India.
