In 2004, in an assisted living facility, a man reads a story to a disoriented woman with Alzheimer's disease. The story takes place in 1940s South Carolina, where mill worker Noah Calhoun and local rich girl, Allie are desperately in love but unable to marry due to her parent's disapproval. When Noah is drafted to serve in World War II, it severs their love affair. Meanwhile, Allie becomes involved with another man that her parents adore. Years later, Noah returns to their small town, directly before Allie's impending marriage and it's clear that their romance is anything but done.
