Tom Wingo is a depressed man questioning the life he used to love with his wife and children in South Carolina. He's stopped teaching and coaching football allowing his wife, a family doctor, to take over while he drowns his sorrows in beer. His wife doesn't understand him, his father is abusive, and his remarried mother is a dominant social climber. When his sister, Savannah, a poet who lives in Manhattan attempts suicide for the second time, her psychiatrist Dr. Susan Lowenstein requests he temporarily move north to help care for her. Patiently and cautiously, Dr. Lowenstein uncovers the terrible secrets hidden in Tom and Savannah's family history. Conversely, Dr. Lowenstein has plenty of her own problems, which Tom is quick to observe.
