In 1930's Austria Maria is failing in her attempts to become a nun. The forgetful postulate is told to think before committing to the church by taking a leave of absence to become the governess in the home of a widowed naval captain with seven children. She delights in the children, but is stunned by the rigid behavior of their stubborn father. It appears he fears giving love to his children because they unconsciously remind him of their now deceased mother. Maria's responses to him and the children transform all of their lives... and hers.
