In 1831, Irishman Charles travels to Australia. Like many people at that time, he has a cousin there who has just been appointed governor. Charles arrives and meets powerful landowner and ex-convict Sam who wants to do a business deal with him. Later, he meets Sam's wife, Henrietta, and is smitten but also concerned as she appears to be alcoholic. They two become close and Henrietta admits she's being given potent drinks by someone in the house to ruin her health and her state of mind. Is it her husband, Sam, or someone else?
