With a meth addicted absentee father and a chronically depressed mute mother, seventeen-year-old year-old Ree has raised her two young siblings alone in a ramshackle house in the Ozarks. When the Sheriff tells her that her father put their house up as bail and Ree will lose it if he doesn't show up, she's terrified. Her father is one of the locals who manufactures crystal meth in homemade labs, so secrecy is sacred, especially with kin. Everywhere Ree goes she's told to stay away. When she persists, the female kin beat her up. She refuses to listen, even after her father's brother, tells her that he's probably dead. She pushes on in constant danger until she's given the unusual evidence needed to prove to the police that her father is dead.
